for generations, the kim clan has been creating ceramic pieces of the highest quality—their pride is wholly reliant on their craft. ever since he was young, all seojun was allowed to dream about was ceramics. learning the classics was important, but pottery is required, his very life line. as his father's least favorite and youngest son out of three, the only way he knew how to appease him was to work on his ceramic skills.

summer 1855

hansung, a cheonmin boy who was one of seojun's closest friends falls ill. seojun's father never approved of their friendship, but he didn't care. despite his efforts to nurse his friend back to health, hansung passes away just two weeks later. the illness still remains a mystery. after this experience, seojun came to realize that his true passion lies within the health of the people. he longed to keep these tragic deaths from happening. he began to dream of opening a clinic for those of the lower class.

his father dismissed his son's "foolish" dreams. realizing that he would need to gain his father's favor first, he abandoned his dreams and fully committed himself to learning and mastering his family's craft. however, nothing could sway his father's opinion about him. the reason? seojun is not his real son.

1858

suddenly, byungjun, seojun's brother runs away from home without notice. after waiting and looking for him for 5 months, huijeong takes matter into her own hands, disappearing without a trace and leaves seojun, hyunjun, and hyunji alone with their father. minjun refused to believe that huijeong left to find byungjun. he needed to blame someone for something—minjun didn't want to be the reason to why his eldest left home and why his wife had to put herself in danger to find him.

it wasn't long before he came up with his own reason: she left to live with seojun's real father. blinded by his rage, he attacks seojun that night, slicing his neck and nearly killing him. if it hadn't been for his childhood friend seo haneul, he would have died that night.

as an adult, seojun continues to express to minjun that he would like to become a physician. after each relentless plea, he been met with only refusal for years. notably, this conflict has led minjun to attempt to kill seojun in the same fashion as he did previously in april, narrowly escaping death once again because of seo haneul.

this constant refusal changes one day when minjun proposes a rather enticing deal: if seojun enters the social season and successfully marries a yangban woman, he may pursue his desired career.

yu huijeong had conceived seojun out of an affair with a male of the yangban class, his identity kept hidden from seojun and the public by huijeong and minjun. to keep this hidden, minjun agreed to have seojun take his surname, but seojun is constantly reminded that he does not belong in his family. all seojun has of his real father is a jade ring with the family seal etched into it.

since the affair, the marriage between huijeong and minjun grew bitter with every year.

CURRENT TIMELINE.

summer 1868

an interest in go saera, a yangban woman, sparks within seojun, but it is cut short due to his busy work schedule and internal struggles. afraid that he is going to hurt her as he finds himself not loving her as he did with his previous lovers, he gave up on the deal that he made with his father. he runs from saera after the ball, and after meeting with his first love, kim eunha, he realizes a troubling fact: he’s still in love with eunha.

during the chilseok nakhwa nori, he finds that his childhood best friend and recent ex-lover, yoon haewon, is with child along with her husband, byun sangwook, at the time. a scandal ensures, thanks to the society papers, with the child possibly being his or sangwook’s. chaos continues to enter seojun’s life as eunha is drugged and his missing mother is found murdered on the same day by the same man. not too long after, haewon’s pregnancy becomes short-lived as the serial killer, hellbent on eliminating interclass relationships, forces her to abort the child.

fall 1868

some of his relationships become strained because of his reluctance to reveal his emotions to others, particularly those related to the events of the chilseok nakhwa nori. seojun continues to battle with his internal struggles regarding his feelings for kim eunha after visiting her due to the drugging incident as per request from her older brother. he discovers a letter that confesses that eunha’s love for him remains in her heart.

a plague begins to spread throughout joseon, but seojun decides to disobey the curfew, choosing to seek eunha at the kim estate as her letter ravages his mind. he confesses to her that he still loves her. shortly after, his younger sister becomes infected with the nightmarish disease.

byungjun comes home, but he suffers from severe amnesia and does not remember seojun and their family.

winter 1868-1869

war strikes joseon as qing invades its lands, and despite being exempt from the draft due to his poor health, seojun is forced to fight by his father. he is nearly fatally wounded during an ambush, suffering two lacerations to his right leg. eunha visits him after the war has ended and discovers that seojun is bedridden. although he must stay in bed to recover, he visits her home in desperation days later to ask eunha’s mother for permission to court her daughter.

001. seojun's complicated relationship with his family is known. often regarded as the black sheep of the family, many are surprised to even find out that a third son of the kim clan exists as his father avoids talking about him as much as possible. it's also known that madam yu disappeared ten years ago, and after her disappearance, it's not uncommon to hear angry voices and yelling when passing by the kim manor at night time. 

seojun's long scar on his neck has been obvious and easily seen for the past ten years. in fact, it's often one of the first things people notice about him. recently, it seems like he suffered the same injury at the same location and is currently in the healing process, causing people to wonder how it could have happened again.

002. in 1849, the kim and yoon family joined hands in a friendship that brought hyunjun, seojun, and haewon together. ever since their first meeting, they have been a rambunctious trio as kids. attached at the hip, the relationship consisted of mostly seojun and hyunjun fighting over something stupid (or over haewon) while haewon watched helplessly like the child of divorced parents. despite their tight bond, they split apart when the brothers' relationship deteriorated when seojun was 11 and hyunjun was 14.

003. despite having broken up in february of 1868, seojun and haewon continued to have relations with each other as confusion about their relationship has continuously blurred the lines between friends and lovers all the way up until early may.

since then, they have casually hung out as friends, with seojun still mildly confused about haewon's feelings towards him due to their natural closeness from being childhood friends. throughout this time, he has noticed that haewon sporadically suffers from suspicious bouts of nausea, but he doesn't think much of it as haewon would brush it off. during the second week of the festival, haewon's nausea has been particularly severe and while enjoying her favorite street food together, haewon suddenly feels ill and throws up on seojun's shoes.

concerned for her health, seojun reads her pulse for indigestion, a skill he learned from the physicians at yeonhwa's shelter. instead of reading a pulse for indigestion, seojun, to his surprise, realizes that her pulse suggests pregnancy. unsure of the accuracy of his reading, he attempts to ask haewon about her recent symptoms, only for her to be taken away by sangwook. troubled by the revelation, he desperately seeks her out and finally finds her with sangwook. together, haewon suddenly vomits again and they rush her to see a physician. there, the physician inspects haewon and reveals to the three that she's with child.

004. due to the heavy workload that his father imposes on him, seojun often doesn't have time to himself. on the rare occasions that he does, he's usually free during the night where he goes out for drinks with his friends or gazes at the stars in the promenade until dawn.

seojun doesn't engage in many physical hobbies such as sports or hiking as he has gradually been experiencing worsening shortness of breath, his occupation being the direct cause. as a ceramist that works unusually long hours, he breathes in hefty amounts of silica dust every day that has been scarring his lungs over the years. his interest in archery has also faded with time as the consistent hours of throwing on the wheel have affected his hands and rendered it too painful to do other dexterous activities. recently, he's been developing a persistent cough that would last for a few days from time to time and tiredness. seojun manages to hold in his cough when he's around others, but it's not uncommon for his coughing to keep him up at night.
